This application note reports the use of the atlas system to monitor the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride, a typical test reaction for exothermic processes.

With any chemical reaction it is important to generate process information as early as possible. The use of reaction monitoring is ideal for providing this information as it is non-invasive, repeatable and provides both kinetic and safety information.

The Atlas system can be used to generate reactionmonitoring data by the addition of a Pt100 probe into the flow of thermal fluid from the circulator. This is done using the Atlas oil drain unit, which has a small thermowell for the insertion of a monitoring probe as shown in the diagram opposite. A small amount of silicone oil is added to the bottom of the thermowell to improve thermal contact.
